Hamilton Emergency Medical Services Receives American Heart
Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Plus Recognition Award

August 27, 2019

Hamilton Emergency Medical Services has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS Gold Plus Award for implementing quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience severe heart attacks.

Every year, more than 250,000 people experience an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the deadliest type of heart attack caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it’s critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by mechanically opening the blocked vessel or by providing clot-busting medication.

The Mission: Lifeline initiative provides tools, training and other resources to support heart attack care following protocols from the most recent evidence-based treatment guidelines. Mission: Lifeline’s EMS recognition program recognizes emergency medical services for their efforts in improving systems of care to rapidly identify suspected heart attack patients, promptly notify the medical center and trigger an early response from the awaiting hospital personnel.

“EMTs and paramedics play a vital part in the system of care for those who have heart attacks,” said Tim Henry, MD, chair of the Mission: Lifeline Acute Coronary Syndrome Subcommittee. “Since they often are the first medical point of contact, they can save precious minutes of treatment time by activating the emergency response system that alerts hospitals to an incoming heart attack patient. We applaud Hamilton Emergency Medical Services for achieving this award in following evidence-based guidelines in the treatment of people who have severe heart attacks.”

The American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® program helps hospitals and emergency

medical services develop systems of care that follow proven standards and procedures for acute coronary syndrome patients. The program works by mobilizing teams across the continuum of care to implement American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology clinical treatment guidelines.

Hamilton’s Anna Shaw Children’s Institute Building Receives Award for Best Design, Architecture

Hamilton’s Anna Shaw Children’s Institute building
receives award for best design, architecture

Healthcare Design (HCD) recently announced the winners and finalists of its 2019 Healthcare Design Showcase awards program. The Anna Shaw Children’s Institute (Hamilton Health Care System) will receive the Award of Merit (highest award) at the HCD Expo & Conference in New Orleans this November. The Healthcare Design Expo & Conference is the industry’s best-attended event focusing on design for healthcare.

HCD is a magazine that serves an audience of architects, interior designers, hospital administrators, facility managers, engineers and key members of the construction community as the premier source of insight, information and inspiration for planning, designing and constructing new or renovated healthcare facilities. Through various channels – magazine, website, events and social media – the magazine actively engages that community.

The Healthcare Design Showcase awards program is in its 19th year of honoring the best design and architecture in the healthcare industry.

The building, which opened April 1, was designed by Earl Swensson Associates (ESa).

“We absolutely love our building – the look, the atmosphere, the windows, the wall vinyls and all of the other details!” said Terri Woodruff, executive director. “The medical elements are hidden in the forest design so that, to the children, it looks like a treehouse in the forest. The wayfinding is working just as we had planned, and the children walk in and begin playing and exploring. They are calm and playful. The anxieties that can occur at a typical doctor’s office are just not present.”

Hamilton’s Anna Shaw Children’s Institute Building Receives Award for Best Design, ArchitectureDedicated to the memory of local philanthropist Anna Sue Shaw, the Institute is an advocate for the care of children who are experiencing the challenges of autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or developmental delays.

With design elements inspired by the style of a tree house, the Institute was designed to be considerate of children’s differing abilities to tolerate light, sound and texture.  The Institute provides a unique environment with the overall goal to blend calming color and fun play for children of all abilities.

The structure’s roof line and design are patterned after a tree house.  The outside of the building pulls together the elements of glass, wood and mountain stone in a color palette of browns, greens and blues to reflect the beauty of the North Georgia mountains.  The walls of windows provide for natural light to warmly flow into the interior of the building.

The room designs include forest animals, birds or butterflies Each of the rooms has dimmable lights.  Some unique areas for care include the Swan Room, an aquatic therapy room for children with a swim tank. The Oriole room is used for occupational therapy. Feeding therapy can take place in the Finch or Falcon rooms in a booth that mimics dining out.  Children can participate in speech therapy in the Sparrow or the Seagull rooms.

Hamilton’s Anna Shaw Children’s Institute Building Receives Award for Best Design, ArchitectureChildren can receive physical or occupational therapy in the Tree House Gym, a large 2,900-square-foot gym with colorful patterns on the floor, an adaptive climbing wall, an indoor slide and a fun track in the middle of the room. During pleasant weather, therapy can be enjoyed outside in the Treehouse Terrace, an outdoor therapy area with a roller slide, a spinning chair, adaptive pull up bars, a sensory wave and a fun set on tympani drums.

“Our care team continually comments on the ease of the workflow due to the design,” said Woodruff. “ESa did a stellar job!”

Hamilton Medical Center Wins Statewide Patient Safety Award for Sepsis Safety

February 19, 2019

GHA AwardThe Partnership for Health and Accountability (PHA) presented its prestigious Quality and Patient Safety Award to Hamilton Medical Center (HMC) for its project that increased sepsis awareness and education. The project, titled, “Early Recognition and Intervention for Sepsis Management,” won second place in the Hospitals with 100-299 Beds category.

These annual awards recognize Georgia health care organizations for achievement in reducing the risk of medical errors and improving patient safety and medical outcomes.

The goals of HMC’s project were to create a new workflow, revise processes and introduce a “sepsis alert” within the electronic health record (HER) to quickly identify and treat patients with suspected sepsis.

A multi-disciplinary Sepsis Team – including representatives from the emergency medicine, hospitalist services, nursing, clinical education, pharmacy, laboratory, clinical informatics and quality management – was set up to discuss the strategies for change.

“This multi-disciplinary team approach and support of executive leadership were key to the success of this project,” said Kimberly Hawkins, clinical quality project coordinator/sepsis coordinator. “We’ll continue to focus on early detection because that provides the best chance for survival and recovery.”

“Rapid recognition and treatment of sepsis is essential to saving lives and improving patient safety,” said Earl Rogers, Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) president and CEO. “We applaud Hamilton Medical Center for its successes and for making critical progress in patient safety while ensuring the best and safest care possible for patients.”

The PHA, an affiliate of GHA, was established in January 2000 to improve patient care and patient safety in hospitals and other health care facilities and create healthy communities.

Founded in 1929, GHA serves more than 170 hospitals in Georgia and promotes the health and welfare of the public through the development of better hospital care for all Georgia’s citizens. The mission of GHA is to advance the health of individuals and communities by serving as the leading advocate for all Georgia hospitals and health care systems. GHA represents its members before the General Assembly and Congress, as well as state and federal regulatory agencies, and is an allied member of the American Hospital Association.

Hamilton Nurse Recognized With DAISY Award

September 25, 2018
DAISY Award winner - Josh Cole
From left are Jeff Myers, CEO; Brandy Salazar, Critical Care manager; Cole; Mike Allen, director of Emergency Services/Critical Care; Cathy Ferguson, chief nursing officer.

Josh Cole, a registered nurse in the medical intensive care unit (MICU) at Hamilton Medical Center (HMC), recently received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The DAISY Award recognizes exemplary nursing excellence, and is the highest honor a nurse can receive at HMC. An award presentation reception was recently held.

Cole was nominated by a patient. The nomination mentioned that he is understanding, a good communicator, personal, professional and that he went out of his way to make the patient more comfortable.

“Josh is a kind and compassionate nurse,” said Brandy Salazar, Critical Care manager. “He maintains an easy-going and positive attitude. I have received multiple positive comments from patients and their families about Josh. They appreciate the time that he takes when he is at the bedside.”

The award, presented in collaboration with The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

DAISY Award recipients receive an honorary DAISY pin, a banner to display on their unit, an award certificate, and the Healer’s Touch, a hand-carved sculpture by the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe. The sculpture is especially meaningful because of the profound respect the Shona tribe gives to their traditional “healers.” A Shona healer is affectionately regarded as a treasure by those they are caring for which describes exactly how the DAISY Foundation and Hamilton feel about nurses.

Forty-three other nurses were also nominated for the award. They include: Kelsey Mitchell, Levi Barnette,  Cheryl Mitchell, Maci Horne, Chris Satterfield, Amanda Cargal, Jamie Hall, Leigh Ann Smith, Shanna Ramage, Gina Hawkins, Stephanie Bergeron, Justin Bailey, Freddy Fairman, Shana Leonard, Jennifer Waldrop, Brittany Pratt, Scott Cavanaugh, Olivia Ridley, Amy Stafford, Kelli Marcus, Sara Evans, Jim Sanders, Donna Johnson, Sandra Killen, Stephanie Lowery, Stephanie Milton, Niki Gerber, Dawn Holbrook, Joy Holland, Yvette Forster, Beth Strawbridge Oana Tentea, Bayo Adeeko, Melanie Gregory, Rachel Manis, Melissa Eskew, Cassie Chamlee, Rachel Patterson, Tara Skiffen, Andrea Griffith, Molly Cooper, Allison Cartledge and Emily Phillips.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.
