in Great American Smokeout

November 20, 2019

Hamilton Diagnostics Center (HDC) is encouraging people to make a plan to quit smoking during the Great American Smokeout on Nov. 21.

“It’s not easy to quit smoking,” said Terri Sullivan, Imaging Services manager. “This event is a great way to start the process and get the tools to make you successful in a smoke-free life.”

For more than 40 years, the American Cancer Society has hosted the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November.  The event is a special day for challenging people to stop smoking and helping people learn about the many tools they can use to help them quit and stay quit. Getting help through counseling and medications doubles or even triples an individual’s chances of quitting successfully.

HDC offers a low-dose lung cancer screening to those who smoke or are former smokers. You are encouraged to ask your primary care physician if you qualify for this screening. Those who don’t have a primary care physician may check for qualification through local walk-in clinics, including Hamilton Convenient Care locations.

Medicare and most commercial insurance companies cover the cost. For those without health coverage, a cash price of $150 is available. Limited assistance is available for those who meet financial assistance criteria.

“Early detection saves lives,” said Sullivan. “The screening is a painless, 10-minute test that could save your life!”

Nearly 43 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, and smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world. Smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths every year, and more than 16 million Americans live with a smoking-related disease. The American Cancer Society is available for support, from questions about quitting smoking to looking for national or local resources to help you quit. To find out more, visit cancer.org/smokeout or call 1-800-227-2345.

Hamilton Diagnostics Center Designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology

November 2, 2017

Lung Cancer ScreeningHamilton Diagnostics Center recently has been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

Hamilton Diagnostics Center
Hamilton Diagnostics Center (HDC) recently has been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR). From left are Stan Casteel, Imaging Services director; Terri Sullivan, HDC manager; Kendall Black, senior CT technologist; and Christina Lively, CT technologist.

The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation recognizing facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer.

In order to receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography (CT), which includes a rigorous review of its lung cancer screening protocol and processes. Also required are procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs.

Hamilton Diagnostics Center is the only facility in this area, including Chattanooga, with this special designation.

Lung cancer screening with low-dose CT scans and appropriate follow-up care significantly reduces lung cancer deaths. In December 2013, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended screening of adults aged 55 to 80 years who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer – taking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.

“If you are a smoker or former smoker, you should check with your doctor to see if you qualify for our low-dose lung cancer screening,” said Terri Sullivan, HDC clinical manager. “It’s a painless, ten-minute test that could save your life.”

The screening is covered by Medicare and many commercial insurance plans.

Lung Cancer ScreeningThe ACR, founded in 1924, is one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the United States. The ACR devotes its resources to making imaging and radiation therapy safe, effective, and accessible to those who need it. Its 36,000 members include radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists, and nuclear medicine physicians.
