Al-Azem Joins Hamilton Physician Group – Specialty Care

March 9, 2023
M. Ali Al-Azem, MD is a pulmonologist at Hamilton Physician Group Specialty Care in Dalton, GA.
Al-Azem

Ali Al-Azem, MD, MSHA, FCCP, FACP, believes the field of medicine is “a mission rather than a job.”

Al-Azem recently joined Hamilton Physician Group – Specialty Care where he treats patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, COVID-19 conditions, pneumonia, acute and chronic pulmonary hypersensitivity conditions, pulmonary hypertension, bronchiolitis and more.

“I enjoy helping and investing in people,” he says. “There have been many advances in modern medicine, especially in the last few years. I focus on individualized care for my patients. One size does not fit all.”

Al-Azem grew up in Damascus, Syria. With three sisters who were already physicians, it didn’t take Al-Azem long to decide to join the profession himself. When he was growing up, his parents instilled in him the idea that medicine is a mission.

“I like to help people and eliminate suffering,” he says.

A double board-certified pulmonologist/intensivist, Al-Azem graduated from Damascus University School of Medicine in Damascus, Syria, and completed his residency in internal medicine, including working as a chief resident, at Damascus University Hospital and St. Barnabas Hospital in New York. He went on to complete a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical Center/Queens Hospital in New York.

After graduating in 1996, he began working in hospitals in Georgia, eventually serving as a medical director of critical care services and respiratory care services. He came to Hamilton after learning of a shared vision for his practice.

Al-Azem enjoys biking and is a fan of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He enjoys listening to classical music, riding his bike and reading history books, especially about the Middle Ages.

To make an appointment with Al-Azem, call 706-529-3072.

Angel Brown, MD Joins Hamilton Physician Group – Specialty Care

April 11, 2021
Angel Brown, MD - a pulmonologist at Hamilton Physician Group - Specialty Care
Angel Brown, MD

Angel Brown, MD, says being a pulmonologist is very rewarding because she loves to see her patients get better.

“Something as simple as a cough can keep people from living their lives, like going to church,” Brown said. “Sometimes it’s something very simple such as putting them on medication that costs only a couple of dollars, and their cough goes away. It’s very fulfilling to help people get back to their lives.”

Brown is a board-certified pulmonologist at Hamilton Physician Group – Specialty Care, 1243 Broadrick Drive. She completed fellowship training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

As part of Hamilton Physician Group – Specialty Care, Brown provides treatment for respiratory diseases, including asthma, bronchitis, COPD, occupational lung diseases, lung cancer and pulmonary fibrosis. Brown joins Vikas Jain, MD, at the practice.

“For the most part, when people are coughing, it’s rarely something that’s contagious, even with all of the viruses and bacterial infections that are going around,” Brown said. “Usually they’re not going to present as an isolated cough.”

The top three reasons for a cough are post-nasal drainage or sinus drainage, asthma and acid reflux disease.

“There’s no infection related to the top three reasons for cough,” said Brown. “Many people feel shunned by their families because of their cough when it likely is not something that’s contagious.”

Brown said being a pulmonologist can be like being a detective.

“Sometimes the issue is in the lungs, and sometimes it’s a different organ altogether,” Brown said. “That’s what makes pulmonary medicine very fun and challenging because you rarely see the same thing twice. You really have to do a lot of thinking and thinking outside of the box. That, to me, is fun. That’s why I was attracted to pulmonary medicine.”

Brown is accepting new patients. To schedule an appointment with Brown, call Hamilton Physician Group – Specialty Care at 706-529-3072.

Connor Joins Hamilton Physician Group – Specialty Care

December 11, 2019

Lee Connor, MDGrowing up, Lee Connor, MD, was always interested in the sciences but it was in college when he figured out he wanted to be in healthcare. “My ability to apply my knowledge and problem-solving skills in a way that benefits others was my main draw to medicine,” he says.

Connor is a new physician at Hamilton Physician Group – Specialty Care, specializing in the treatment of infectious diseases.

Board certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Connor did his internal medicine residency at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, N.C., and his infectious disease fellowship at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. He completed his medical schooling at Florida International University, Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in Miami.

Connor says his patient care philosophy is to work as a team.

“Each patient is different, and treatments should be individualized based on the patient’s own health goals,” Connor says. “Creating an atmosphere of open communication and trust is essential in the field of medicine, and I strive for this in my practice because it leads to a more accurate diagnosis and therefore better care.”

A former Eagle Scout, Connor grew up camping and fishing with his father. He enjoys hiking, camping and being out on the water in his free time. He and his wife have a 10-month-old son. The family enjoys going to parks in the area and exploring the outdoors. They also enjoy trying new restaurants and new cuisines.
