Hamilton Medical Center was excited to open a community-based Internal Medicine program in 2020. Our first-class consisted of 12 PGY-1 and 6 PGY-2 residents. Hamilton provides a diverse mix of patients, supervising physician teachers, and staff. Residents receive instruction from both full-time Hamilton-employed physicians and community-based faculty members. All training occurs conveniently within the Hamilton Health Care System. We are proud of our initial accreditation status with the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Our goal of career preparation and education focuses on producing the highest quality, patient-focused, general Internal Medicine residency graduates possible. We embrace the six core competencies and milestones as highlighted by the ACGME, and craft our education to ensure each resident has a maximal opportunity to master these topics. The medical field has constantly evolving expectations and requirements, and achieving this goal necessitates that we embrace change, identify and create opportunities for improvement, innovate to solve problems and promote the advancement, and treat every resident as an individual with a voice in their educational process.
Our residency educational curriculum encompasses a wide variety of topics and formats that aim to provide our residents with a well-rounded experience. The program includes the Academic Half Day, which is a 4-5 hour block of curricular conferences each week. Also included in the plan is an Ambulatory and integrated interprofessional hospital-based curriculum. There is a comprehensive orientation planned to help prepare our newest trainees for the rigors of residency training, enhance their documentation skills, and let them experience true system-based practice within the healthcare system. Additional curriculum for leadership, Business of Medicine, research, and scholarship, as well as quality, safety, and high-value care, will help residents prepare for both practice and lifelong learning. Simulation Lab monthly topics include ultrasound training, and the bedside physical exam skill sessions integrate key physical exam skills as highlighted in the Stanford 25.
Our residents will have frequent opportunities to provide feedback and input into the program. This is accomplished through monthly administrative updates, regularly scheduled town hall meetings, and system committee membership, residency-based committees as well as hospital and program leadership open-door policies.
