HAMILTON HEALTH CARE SYSTEM GOES TOBACCO FREE

Dalton, GA – Beginning March 15, 2007, Hamilton Health Care System begins a phased elimination of the use of tobacco products on its campus.

The first phase, effective March 15th, eliminates tobacco use for all Hamilton Associates, Medical Staff, physician’s personal employees, students, contracted personnel, Volunteers, visitors and vendors on the Hamilton Medical Center and Murray Medical Center campuses.

In the next phase, Hamilton will be addressing patients’ use of tobacco products while hospitalized. Some hospital patients’ treatments involve addictions and Hamilton seeks to support their healing with healthy alternatives.

“As this region’s health care provider, we are committed to the promotion of healthy living and disease prevention,” explained Hamilton President and CEO John Bowling. “With this commitment comes the responsibility of providing a safe and healthy healing environment.”

Bowling reported that this initiative has been in careful planning since last year. A task force comprised of both clinical and non-clinical staff, Medical Staff and employees who use tobacco products has provided oversight for the change.

Bowling emphasized that Hamilton intends to take a supportive stance in implementing this initiative.

“This change is not intended to control any person’s choice to use tobacco products, but rather to create a healthier environment for everyone at Hamilton,” said Bowling.

Hamilton joins numerous health care systems throughout the nation who have discontinued the use of tobacco products on their hospital campuses. ###
