Dalton, GA – Hamilton Health Care System Laboratory Professionals perform approximately one million tests each year. These laboratory tests comprise an estimated 70% of the patient’s medical records and are vital to the diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease.

Laboratory professionals are key members of today’s health care team. They have the knowledge to unlock important medical information that is critical to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Hamilton Medical Center employs 64 laboratory professionals; Murray Medical Center employs 10 laboratory professionals.

“We have to be painstakingly meticulous in performing our jobs to provide dependable answers to your family physicians,” said Dr. Kathryn Knight, HMC Pathologist. Each day, nurses, physicians, and other clinicians depend on Hamilton laboratory professionals to perform various tests, interpret the results, and help to provide a complete picture of a patient’s health. New and different pathogens are contributing to this increased need. The identification of diseases like AIDS, Lyme disease and Hepatitis C, along with the resurgence of once thought controlled diseases like Tuberculosis, pose serious threats to public health.

April 24 – 30, 2005, Hamilton will be celebrating National Medical Laboratory Week, the theme this year is Laboratory Professionals: The Heart of the Medical Investigation Team. It is a time to honor more than 280,000 medical laboratory professionals across the nation.

“National Medical Laboratory Week celebrates the vital role laboratory specialists play in patient care and wellness," said Pamela Timms, Medical Technologist, Hamilton Medical Center.

Medical laboratory professionals represent a variety of specialties, including pathologists, medical technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical laboratory technicians, histotechnologists, histological technicians, cytotechnolgists, cytopathologists, phlebotomy technicians, clinical chemists, microbiologists, laboratory managers, medical educators and outreach programs that provide liaison service between hospitals and physician offices.
