DALTON, GA – Hamilton Medical Center provides screening services and health education aimed at preventing illness through early diagnosis and treatment through participation in community and industry-based health fairs.

“If an individual’s screening suggests further evaluation, they are encouraged to seek appropriate follow-up care with their physician,” states Beneta Parsons, Community Relations Specialist.

Hamilton Medical Center has participated in health fairs for decades. However, Hamilton formally developed its health fair program in 2001. It has grown from a handful of health fairs annually to consistently serving over 15,000 north Georgia residents at over 25 community and industry-based health fairs each year, including the Latin American Community Alliance Health Fair.

“By participating in health fairs, we have identified potential life threatening diseases, such as diabetes or high blood pressure in employees that were unaware they had any health problems,” said Parsons. “In one case, Whitfield EMS transported an employee with an extremely high blood pressure to Hamilton Medical Center. We later learned, if this employee had not received immediate medical attention, they could have suffered a stroke or a heart attack at any time.”

The health fair concept was born back in the late 1970's as the brainchild of John F. Brensike, a physician conducting heart disease research at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C. As a response to the need to provide health-screening services to the community, Dr. Brensike started the National Health Screening Council for Volunteer Organizations (NHSCVO) as a means of promoting preventative health maintenance. The idea was presented by the NHSCVO to interested communities across the country.

Hamilton Medical Center prides itself with outstanding service line participation in health fairs including Laboratory Services, Hamilton Bradley Center, the Healthmobile, Home Health Care, Diabetes Treatment Center, Westcott Center, Hamilton Weight Management and Murray Medical Center.
