Healing Sounds
Hamilton's music program soothes patients

While music has been known to soothe the savage beast, it also can heal the hospitalized patient. That’s why Hamilton Medical Center continues its venture into music therapy with its Healing Sounds of Hamilton program.

“As a part of our commitment to providing health care that exceeds expectations, we have brought this program to our community through the Whitfield Healthcare Foundation,” said John Bowling, President and CEO of Hamilton. “We are extremely fortunate to have Celeste who is so generous with her time and skills.”

Healing Sounds of Hamilton, performed at different locations throughout the hospital, is presented by Celeste Stewart, who plays the Celtic harp. Wherever she sets up her instrument, her goal is to provide a healing atmosphere for patients, visitors, and hospital staff.

Studies have shown that live music reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, aids in digestion and increases production of pain-reducing endorphins. Music is becoming a part of therapy in drug and alcohol detoxification, is used as an aid for those with learning disabilities, and has shown good results with Alzheimer patients and comatose patients. Live music has been shown also to relax the body and mind, allowing more effective responses to medical treatment and enhancing the work of the immune system. It’s still unclear how music accomplishes all this.

“We believe that patients, visitors, and staff will reap the soothing benefits of the Healing Sounds of Hamilton program,” said Bowling. “We hope this music therapy will touch everyone who visits Hamilton Medical Center.”

Through the generosity of an initial anonymous donor to the Whitfield Healthcare Foundation, the funds have been made available to provide the live music of Healing Sounds of Hamilton at various places in the hospital. Additional donations to the Whitfield Healthcare Foundation will ensure the continuation of the program.
