Medical professionals volunteer time to provide sports physicals

Thursday, May 12, 2016

Student-athletes from Dalton State College and local high and middle schools recently received free physicals. More than 1,400 students participated.

Volunteers included physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and other health care professionals.

The medical professionals provided sports physicals, which involved checks on vital signs, height, weight and vision, a review of their comprehensive medical questionnaires, and a physical screening.

After all the physicals were done, any athlete who needed cardiac clearance was able to get this done for free, provided by representatives from Hamilton Cardiology Associates.

Hamilton Sports Medicine, a program provided by Hamilton Medical Center, coordinates the event every year with the schools. Hamilton Sports Medicine provides athletic trainers for outreach athletic assistance at local high schools in Whitfield, and Gordon counties, as well as for Dalton State College. As part of the program, an athletic trainer is on-sight at local high school, and community sports events.
