Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Obesity

Medicare now has coverage provisions for behavior therapy for obesity. Medicare beneficiaries with obesity are eligible for a series of face-to-face visits and for these services, the Medicare Part B deductible and coinsurance are waived!

To be eligible, you must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) equal to or greater than 30 kg/m2 and must be competent and alert at the time of counseling.  Physician’s Referral Required.  After eligibility is established, you can receive the following series of visits:

One face-to-face visit every week for the first month

One face-to-face visit every other week for months two through six

IF you have lost at least 6.6 pounds during the first six months, you can have an additional six face-to-face visits monthly (months seven through twelve)

If you don’t hit the required target of 6.6 pounds by the end of the first six months, you will still get another opportunity, but you have to wait six months before Medicare will pay for you to try again.  There is no limit to how many attempts you can make, provided that your BMI is still 30 or greater and six months have gone by since the last attempt.

Counseling visits include measuring your BMI, assessing your diet, and providing intensive behavior counseling and therapy with interventions aimed at helping you lose the weight and keep it off!
