Shana Whiteford, Hamilton Cancer Institute nurse manager, recently
received the Hamilton Hero Award for going above and beyond after
witnessing an auto accident.
Recently, Whiteford was driving work when a car coming from the opposite direction veered off the road and down into a ravine. The car wasn’t visible from the road, and Whiteford was the only witness.
She pulled over, called 9-1-1 and then started down the ravine, calling to see if anyone would answer. As she got closer, she could see that the driver was getting out of the car, though she wasn’t sure based on the severity of the accident.
The driver was dazed and didn’t remember what happened. Shana helped the driver back up to her car and made sure the driver was stable until Hamilton Emergency Medical Services associates arrived.
“What Shana did that day showed the alignment between Hamilton’s motto, ‘We serve with compassion,’ and Shana’s character,” said Jeff Heffelfinger, Hamilton Cancer Institute service line administrator. “Her actions clarified for me that Hamilton associates weren’t simply ascribing to a corporate program, but rather ‘the program’ reflects the character and values of its associates.”
